ABP News India became the very first channel in the history of India to provide bilingual news production (in Hindi and English). The channel launched in 1998 as Star News in partnership with NDTV. The channel which was formerly known as Star News was later rebranded in 2012 as ABP News with a complete emphasis on providing News in Hindi only throughout India. The channel is dedicated to providing news in the form of bulletins and in an entertaining fashion through featured shows. In sports, cricket is the most covered followed by football then you have the political, social-economic and criminal/law enforcement stories.
The channel initially launched under the banner of Star News when they broadcasted shows that were produced in tandem with NDTV. In 2003, NDTV’s contract ran out and Star started to produce its own shows. However, at the end of 2003 Government enforced a sanction that let foreign companies only have 26% equity in News business. This led to the creation of Media Content and Communication Services Pvt. Ltd with the ABP group. Their affiliation ran for 8 years until 2012 when Star finally bid News business in India adieu in order to focus on entertainment. ABP then rebranded Star News as ABP news and made it a completely Hindi channel. Then ABP Majha became news channel in Marathi, ABP Ananda in Bengali and ABP Sanjha as a Punjabi channel in the northern region.
