DDSports is a channel that is under the ownership of the Indian state and it operates as an exclusively sports channel on cable and satellite TV. The channel was launched in 1998 under the banner of Doordarshan, which is a sister entertainment channel to the now sports channel. DD sports started its transmission as a 6 hour sports broadcasting channel daily. With its meteoric rise to popularity, the channel increased its coverage to 12 hours the next year and by the time the new millennia rolled around, the channel went 24/7. Add to the fact that it also became available nationwide on satellite TV, DDSports also became a Free-to-Air sports channel that year, meaning that anybody with the proper receiving equipment could access the channel. DD Sports have become a very integrated part of the Indian sports scene with it showing massive support for the more local sports such as Kho-Kho and Kabaddi. Internationally speaking, DDSports airs just about any other sporting event that it could get the rights to while the most popular of them are Cricket, Football, Hockey and Tennis.
